The Pullman Sleeping Car was invented by George Pullman in 1857. For example, his “Sleeping Cars,” series brings inanimate objects to life with subtle humor. A full 43 percent of cities prohibit people from sleeping in vehicles, court ended a 31-year-old ban on sleeping in cars in Los Angeles. The car (which is still running) is a 1996 Honda Accord with 272,000 miles on it. Sleeping cars of sorts had first appeared on the Cumberland Valley Railroad about 1838, although their use was not widespread. A court overturned a law that had made it a crime to live in your car. Sleeping accommodations are available on most long-distance routes. But sleeping cars had been around since the 1830s - so what made Pullman's stand out?
